Hey Old Man, Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence…but I’d love to believe this

TIL, thanks to Reddit, that there was a Chinese man, Li Ching-Yuen,  who claimed to be very very old. According to wikipedia, by his account he was 197 when he died.

The crazy thing is, there are supposedly court documents from the 18th and 19th century that support these claims.  I have no way of knowing if this is actually true or not, but even if you assume the documents are real, this is not enough evidence to support such an extraordinary claim IMO.  What’s to say this guy was just not some guy claiming to be someone claiming to be the actual Li Ching-Yuen?

Anyways, it’s still a fun fantasy to indulge, even if it’s probably BS.  However, it’s not impossible.  A very low calorie diet providing adequate nutrients, combined with regular exercise and with anomalously good genes, could theoretically allow for a 200 year life span.  I think…but I’m no expert.
